New Tuition Assistance benefit level announced for 2015
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training Fund Board of Trustees recently approved the amount of Tuition Assistance to be available to members in 2015. The annual cap for 2015 has been set at $5,250 per full time FTE (prorated for part timers).
This change affects eligible members in the Service, LPN, Pro-Tech and RN bargaining units at participating employers. Tuition Assistance covers tuition, school fees, required textbooks/software and required course equipment for approved college programs.
An important note for educational expenses that cross calendar years:
The calendar year benefit level against which eligible Tuition Assistance costs shall be applied will correspond with the year in which the class or course being paid for actually begins as opposed to the year in which registration or payment for the class or course may occur or the related program of study may begin. Example: A member registers in December 2014 for a course that begins in January 2015. The tuition expense for the course will be applied to the student’s 2015 benefit cap (not 2014).

Western Governors University (WGU), Healthcare Career Advancement Program (H-CAP), and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), have partnered to provide the union’s 85,000 nurses a new, more affordable means to earn advanced degrees. Under the terms of an agreement with the Healthcare Career Advancement Program (H-CAP), SEIU members will receive information regarding WGU’s accredited BSN and MSN degree programs as well as eligibility for a 5% discount for up to two years.
The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training Fund provides education and career advancement programs for eligible healthcare employees to improve their skills, move up career ladders and make a better life for themselves and their families.

The SEIU Healthcare 1199NW Multi-Employer Training Fund Board of Trustees recently voted to increase the maximum amount of tuition assistance for eligible participants from $5,250 per year to $10,500 per year for 2012 and 2013 for bargaining unit members in the Service, LPN, Pro-Tech and RN bargaining units of participating employers.
The increase is good news for participants. Adrienne Maloney, radiology technician at Swedish Redmond, already completed a program this year that was double the original Tuition Assistance benefit amount. “I feel the increase in tuition funds provides less economic stress for students trying to complete their education,” said Adrienne. “Now I’m considering taking MRI classes and feel the additional funds gives me an incentive to further my education and realize my goals.”
The Tuition Assistance benefit pays for tuition, books, and fees approved for college programs. The $10,500 amount will be pro-rated based on FTE status.
Participants who exhausted their $5250 benefit earlier in 2012 should contact the Training Fund for continuation of their tuition assistance benefit.
